Temporary Jobs
If you’re considering doing some temping work, but you don’t know how to get started, your first step should be to find a good recruitment agency operating in the geographical location you wish to work in. They will be able to accurately match up your job skills with relevant positions they have on their books. Recruitment agencies will usually have existing relationships with a number of companies in their vicinity, and they should be able to advise you on the industries and sectors that you will be best suited to. Their recruitment consultants should also be able to help you overcome any nerves or uncertainties you have about temping. The agency needs temp workers to help their business work so you are doing them a favour by registering with them.
There are lots of different types of agency available, from general temp recruitment agencies who recruit across a number of different industries, to dedicated agencies who specialize in one particular field such as office work. Some have physical office locations whereas others are purely internet based. Either way, their goal is the same – to match you with a suitable post that will earn you the best hourly rate.
Before you start getting in touch with recruitment agencies, it’s important that you first make sure that you have a good, up-to-date curriculum vitae. This will enhance your chances of finding a job quickly as the agency can start sending out your details to prospective companies straight away. This level of organization also shows that you are well organized and enthusiastic as well as professional.
Different levels of qualifications and experience are required for different temp jobs, some require a very specific skill-set and others will require little or no experience or qualifications at all. For example, IT temps and construction temps will require specific skills and, in some cases, professional qualifications whereas secretarial temps may only require a good telephone manner and reasonable word processing skills. Some temp jobs, particularly those in the catering industry require nothing more than a smart appearance and a good attitude, it really does vary very much from industry to industry. Regardless of the skills, qualifications and experience you have you will be able to find work.
Bare in mind that big cities will almost always attract more applicants for all jobs including temp jobs so don’t just assume that because you turn up the jobs is yours. Treat the interview as you would any other, with a determination to make the best possible first impression. Temping jobs in London and temp jobs in Leeds will almost certainly be more sought after due to the number of students living in these cities so be prepared.
